REMARKS BY KING EDWARD ASIMINI WILLIAM DAPPA PEPPLE, PEREKULE XI- NATURAL RULER AND AMANYANABO OF GRAND BONNY KINGDOM AT THE FINALS OF THE AMANYANABO FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT IN BONNY ON SATURDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2022

REMARKS BY KING EDWARD ASIMINI WILLIAM DAPPA PEPPLE

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the final of the Annual Amanyanabo Football Tournament today. Let me, Specially, welcome the Managing Director of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited (NLNG), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, whose unrelenting support to the sustenance of this tournament has indeed given it a life of its own, I urge for a symbiotic sustenance and indeed an increase in the tempo of such positive attitudes.

Since the commencement of this tournament in 2019, though with a two-year break occasioned by the outbreak of Covid-19, the Amanyanabo Football Tournament has expanded and has continued to attract greater attention nationally and internationally. I believe that sooner than later, the objectives for Initiating the tournament would begin to manifest.

You will agree with me that the population of the youth in a Society is its most important asset. They inherit flaws in our communities and inherently take up the cause of driving it to new heights.

Yet the youth population is sometimes, written off and ultimately let down by their government and society at large.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance to empower our youth and facilitate a sustainable change that helps set a positive precedent for the future. One of the ways of doing this is through football. Having the honour of being the most popular sport in Nigeria, football has always been the go-to choice for establishing ways to engage and empower the youth.

We are all aware of the huge potentials that football offers globally. It is a huge industry, and we are determined to make our people part of this huge industry, beginning with the exposure that this tournament offers.

It is for this reason that I am happy to have in our midst here, seasoned coaches of reputable club in Nigerian, including former and present national team coaches, who are here to headhunt for exciting new talents. Just three days ago, Real Madrid offered a 16-year-old Brazilian kid a huge contract.

Things like that start from little beginnings such as this. Let me recognize the coach of Rangers International FC, Enugu, Abdul Miakaba; Bayelsa United, Diepriye Tebowei; Abia Warriors, Imama Amapakabo, and of course the coach of the under-23 team, Boboye Kennedy,
I also wish to thank the FIFA licensed scouts based here and in the United Kingdom, as well as the President of Merelinese FC of Portugal, Jose Rui Varela Correia, our own Austin Eguavon, whom you all know and remember his exploits as a member of the Super Eagles, both as a player and later coach of the national team.

I am further delighted with the presence of a seasoned sports Journalist from the UK, Kelechi Anyikude, and other high-ranking sports Journalists representing some of the very high-profile media organizations across the globe. Indeed, it is not just this tournament that would receive global attention owing to their presence here, but you the players, who are the centre of attraction.

Finally I would like to remind all the footballers who participated in this year’s edition of the tournament, and especially those of you in the finals today, that your destinies are in your hands. Remember that your best game today may take you to the professional side of this best sport in life

Let me also applaud all the supporters of the various sides for their show of sportsmanship since the commencement of the tournament. Your comportment and unrelenting support have been instrumental to the high-level performance of the teams so far. I urge you to continue in the light today as we showcase the best of football in Bonny Kingdom.
Thank you and God Bless.
